句動詞とは？

句動詞とは、動詞＋前置詞、動詞＋副詞、または、動詞＋前置詞と副詞の両方を組み合わせて構成されたフレーズです。動詞と不変化詞（前置詞や副詞）の組み合わせは、構成要素である各語の定義とは異なる新たな意味を生み出します。

句動詞は、センテンス内において独立した意味単位として扱う必要があります。また、句動詞の多くには複数の意味がある点も覚えておくと良いでしょう。

句動詞の構成

句動詞は、ベースとなる動詞（例：get）と副詞（例：along）、動詞（例：get）と前置詞（例：with）、または動詞（例：get）と副詞（例：along）＋前置詞（例：with）の両方から構成され、特定のアクションを表現する独立した意味単位を生み出します。

句動詞は以下３つのいずれかの方法で構成できます。
動詞＋前置詞
動詞＋副詞
動詞＋副詞＋前置詞

動詞を前置詞と組み合わせる

句動詞の多くは、動詞に前置詞を付け加えて成り立っています。前置詞は、すべての句動詞において同じ機能を果たしているとは限りません。

Example: Use up: 使い果たす・使いきる
The guest used up all the water.

Example: Make up: 和解する
She made up with her parents.

動詞を副詞と組み合わせる

その他に、メインとなる動詞に副詞を付け加えて構成された句動詞もあります。

Example: Take after: ～に似ている・～のように見える
She takes after her mother.

Example: Turn off: 消す・止める
She turned off the lights.

動詞と副詞＋前置詞を組み合わせる

上記２種類以外に、動詞の後に副詞と前置詞の両方が付いた構成の句動詞もあります。このタイプの句動詞に使われている副詞や前置詞は、通常センテンス内のメインの動詞と切り離せないことに注意してください。

Example: Get away with: 罰を逃れる
Don't think about getting away with this.

Example: Sneak up on: 後ろからこっそり驚かす
The cat snuck up on the mouse before pouncing.

句動詞はいつ使うのか

句動詞は主に口語英語や、日常使いの文語英語で使われますが、アカデミックライティングでは句動詞の使用を避けた方がいいでしょう。句動詞の代わりに、より「学術的」響きのある、動詞だけで表現できる同意語に置き換える方法を検討してください。

句動詞をアカデミックに適した動詞に置き換える

とはいえ、アカデミックライティングでも句動詞を使わなければならないケースも時にはあります。アカデミックライティングで句動詞を用いる時は、それらがカジュアル過ぎる表現でないことを確認しましょう。

句動詞: This paper looks at the effect of Drug Y on patients.

学術的動詞: This paper examines the effect of Drug Y on patients.

句動詞: The research found out that Drug Y had no effect on the patients.

学術的動詞: The research discovered that Drug Y has no effect on the patients.

句動詞の分離

前置詞や副詞がメインの動詞から切り離せる句動詞がある一方、切り離せない句動詞もあります。句動詞は次の２つのカテゴリーに分類できます。

・分離不可能な句動詞

分離可能な句動詞

分離可能な句動詞とは、動詞と前置詞や副詞とを切り離せるものです。
前置詞や副詞の位置は動詞のすぐ後、または目的語の後のどちらでも大丈夫です。

分離してない句動詞: The student gave back the book.

分離された句動詞: The student gave the book back to her.

分離してない句動詞: Don’t forget to hand in your assignment.

分離された句動詞: Don’t forget to hand your assignment in.

目的語が代名詞の場合、前置詞や副詞は必ず代名詞の後にくることに注意してください。

Correct: The boy might set off the alarm.
He might set it off.

Incorrect: The boy might set off it.

分離不可能な句動詞

分離不可能な句動詞とは、動詞と前置詞、または動詞と副詞を切り離せないものをいいます。前置詞や副詞は必ず動詞のすぐ後にきます。

Correct: The thieves broke into the house last night.

Incorrect: The thieves broke the house into last night.

Correct: Please go over the materials before the lecture.
